Seeds sown from Dahlias will not come true to the parent plant, but many display certain traits from the parents ie Strong stems, colours etc. Its always exciting to see what you get, and if you like the result by the end of the growing season the seedling would have developed a tuber which can be divided in the future to grow more of your own new variety.
DAYS TO GERMINATION:
3-5 days at 18-21°C
Sow 4-5 weeks before last frost in seed trays. Cover seed with growing medium and keep soil surface moist until emergence. When seedlings have true leaves, transplant into larger cell packs. To maintain healthy seedlings, do not allow plants to become root bound and give adequate light to stop plants becoming leggy. Direct seed – After last frost when soil is (18–21°C), sow thinly, 5mm deep. Cover lightly but firmly. Keep surface moist until emergence. Thin after first true leaves appear.
